Sermons on Time

James – Right Perspective

James 4:13-5:11 There are two types of time. One is the time we see on our watches and mobiles. The other is time from God’s perspective – seeing that life is uncertain, and judgement is coming, and the Lord is returning. If we lose track of time in this sense, it’s disastrous, because then we won’t be living as we should.

I am (6) – I am

John 8:58 The problem with time is that it is finite. We only have so much of it. Rich people can’t buy more hours; scientists can’t invent more minutes. And all too soon our time will be up. We’re trapped in time, finite but longing for the infinite. We need more than time management gurus. We need Jesus, who said, ‘Before Abraham was, I am’.

I am (8) – I am (Lunchtime)

John 8:58 The problem with time is that it is finite. We only have so much of it. Rich people can’t buy more hours; scientists can’t invent more minutes. And all too soon our time will be up. We’re trapped in time, finite but longing for the infinite. We need more than time management gurus. We need Jesus, who said, ‘Before Abraham was, I am’.

Why are we so busy and stressed?

Ecclesiastes 3:1-15 The proliferation of labour-saving technologies like washing machines and even supermarket deliveries means that jobs which would have taken our forbears the best part of a week now take us only minutes, and yet somehow we’re busier than ever. In fact it’s suggested that some technologies can even make things worse: emails have multiplied the amount of communication we have to engage with, and mobile phones mean we’re now under greater pressure to reply immediately, and can never leave our work behind. Listen in as we reflect on some ancient wisdom to help us with this very contemporary issue of why we are so busy and stressed.

What’s the best use of my time?

Isaiah 49:8-13 We have many competing demands on our time. In his previous talk, Richard urged us to prioritise carefully and say ‘no’ to good things for the sake of the best. But what are the best ways to use our time? What must we prioritise? Listen in as Isaiah shows us how God would have us live.
