Various Confessing that we are sinners, and asking God for mercy through Jesus, is how we enter the kingdom of God. But how does anyone get from thinking they are essentially good and en route to a better place, to recognizing that they are sinners heading for judgement? This is the first talk in a series of two called ‘Crime & Punishment’.

Good News (11) – Heart Problem

Mark 7:1-23 Hands, face, space. Such measures are effective in stopping the spread of a virus, but useless when in stopping the spread of sin. Much religion though operates on this basis. It assumes that the problem is out there in the world and we need to protect ourselves from infection and wash ourselves clean. But true worship recognizes the problem is not outside of us but in us. And a much deeper solution is needed.

Genesis 3:1-24 A London drinking song begins with the lyrics “Here’s to sin and here’s to virtue, a little bit of both won’t hurt you,” and the common feeling is that as long as no-one gets too badly hurt, there’s nothing wrong with a bit of grown-up naughtiness from time to time. Perhaps it’s time to say goodbye to old-fashioned categories like sin, guilt, good and bad, and forgiveness? Listen in as we look at one of the foundational texts of the Old Testament – Genesis 3 – and see what relevance it has in our morally ambiguous world.
