Daring to Declare: The Ancient of Days in an intolerant society

Daniel 6-10 What makes a Christian stand out in a secular pluralist culture? Not necessarily by the behaviours we demonstrate, though they may well be different. The fundamental difference is seen at the foundational level: we act differently because we have encountered a Lord who is so life changing that we see everything differently. That’s what we learn from the book of Daniel: living holy lives is empowered by a distinct faith in a faithful God, a distinct love from a relational God and a distinct hope in a redeeming God.

Daring to Declare: The Day of Judgement in an insolent society

Daniel 3, 5 We are encouraged to take our whole self to work, but what about the most important part of ourselves – our relationship with the living God? How do we take our faith to work? The book of Daniel describes the people of God living in exile in a world not dissimilar to our own – a world of power, wealth and the glorification of self-made success. When we’re encouraged to fit in and go with the flow, how do we remain distinctive? When see people living for the moment, how do we prepare them for the day of judgement? When we face times of suffering, how do we draw close to the Lord?

Daring to Declare: The Glory of Majesty in an ignorant society

Daniel 1, 2, 4 The way we live is shaped by how we see reality. Are we the Master of the Universe or do we see the everlasting dominion of the Most High God? King Nebuchadnezzar thought he had it all, until it was taken away and he found something better: the living God, a restored humility and lasting treasure. As we look at how Daniel navigated working in a powerful success culture, we will learn how he pointed the King of Babylon to the King of the Universe and how when he lifted his eyes to the heavens, everything changed.

Challenge Accepted: Don’t compromise

Daniel 6 When God calls us to live distinctively, he’s also calling us to live consistently. This is by no means an easy task! It’s important to have role models that we can look to for encouragement, and the book of Daniel provides us with many lessons in how to live in a world that rejects God. Daniel, by chapter 6, is in his 80s, having served for at least 65 years in the Babylonian Empire. But it isn’t until now that, as an old man, he is faced with his biggest challenge to his faith! And he faced this challenge in ways we might not expect – Daniel did exactly what he had always done!

Be thinking: Where is God when life hurts?

Daniel 3:19-30If it hasn’t happened to us already then it’s very likely to be just a matter of time before we experience painful, seemingly pointless, tragedy. When this happens the question: “Where is God when life hurts?” becomes not just a philosophical question but a real and practical one. Listen in as we consider what anchors we need to put in place before the storm hits.

Daniel 4:24-37 Reports from the formerly Christian city of Qaraqosh in Iraq speak of Christians being forced by the Islamic State to convert, and the church buildings have been converted into mosques or prisons. Are we still to say that God is ruling in those situations? To what extent is God’s involvement in this world limited by human free will?
